Causes and Awareness
Breast Cancer Awareness Month
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. We have to keep the message of prevention and early detection loud and constant when it come to all preventable diseases. So is breast cancer a preventable disease? I think Dr. Emily Senay gives the best response.
"Preventing it really would require a much better understanding of what causes it. And we really don't know yet what causes breast cancer.Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
"Having said that, we do know that there are things women can do, women at average risk, to reduce their risk of getting breast cancer. And it's not absolute, because it's very hard to predict in an individual person who will or won't get it. But we know from large population studies that there are some things that are linked to reducing risks, or at least, doing the opposite behavior is linked to an increased risk." As Told to CBS
Breast cancer is a pervasive disease that has touched everyone in some shape or form. My grandmother died of breast cancer at the age of 55. I saw first hand the dark side of the disease. I was extremely close to my Dear, Dear , that's what I called her. To witness her going through battle is indescribable. The treatment for breast cancer is the 80's was no where near what we have today. Her pain ended in 1986. Then, imagine the anguish I felt only to face the Big "C" again with my mother-in-law years later. Just like my grandmother, she is a woman of strong faith and is a warrior. Today, I can report to you she is in remission.
We must continue to share our stories and experiences with one another until we find a cure. I appreciate Conventional Culture sharing her story today about the importance of early detection.
Prevention and early detection is key and includes nutrition, self-exams, mammograms, and/or genetic profiling. We must continue to inform ourselves, and work to make the best choices we can daily with the information we have.
Mammograms | Mammogram Fact Sheet from National Cancer Institute
Nutrition | Informative article by Joel Fuhrman, M.D. regarding the importance of nutrition, and addressing some the dangers of mammograms.
Breast Self Examination (BSE) | Step Into My Green World provides handy guidance on performing self-exams.
At the end of the day all we can do is find out what's true and false with the latest research on healthy living for cancer prevention and survivorship. As well as, bear with one another with gentleness and grace.
