CA Governor Signs Two Key Laws Regarding Education

California Governor Jerry Brown has been busy lately enacting new laws. Two of the new laws are AB 420 - Eliminates Student Suspensions for Minor Misbehavior and  SB 1177 - Student Online Personal Information Protection Act, or SOPIPA, prohibits operators of online educational services from selling student data and using such information to target advertising to students or to "amass a profile" on students for a non-educational purpose .

American Civil Liberties Union No Cal (ACLU)California Enacts First-in-the-Nation Law to Eliminate Student Suspensions for Minor Misbehavior

“Kids who have been suspended or expelled are two times more likely to drop out and five times more likely to turn to crime,” the bill's author, Assemblyman Roger Dickinson (D-Sacramento), said in a statement released Saturday. “Rather than kicking students out of school, we need to keep young people in school on track to graduate, and out of the criminal justice system.” Reports LA Times
