The Art of Affirmation

Marriage

Affirm is a great word. In Latin it means to make firm, to strengthen. Applied to facts, it means to add our testimony to the fact to strengthen it. Affirmation should be a daily practice in a marriage.

Learning the art of affirmation can transform how you see your spouse. Jim Burns, author of “Creating an Intimate Marriage” states “It takes nine affirming comments to make up for one critical comment. If you are like most people, you owe your spouse a boatload of encouragement.”

Tips For Practicing Affirmation in a Marriage

  • Show Appreciation Often
  • Be Sincere – Nothing ruins a compliment more than insincerity.
  • Be Specific – Get creative and be particular with affirmations to your spouse.
  • Be Warm – Deliver your affirmations kindly.
  • Affirm In the Moment – Nothing shocks your spouse more that saying “See…this is exactly why I love You”

The world is full of critics and your spouse certainly experiences enough critiques in a day’s time. Be a pillar of strength for each other, building one another, and encourage the good in each other.

What keeps you from affirming your spouse consistently?

What about your spouse could you affirm more often?
