Excerpts From Joint Center For Political And Economic Studies

William H. Gray III rise in the United States House of Representatives to chair its Budget Committee and then to become the Majority Whip were historic achievements that happened two decades before America would elect its first black President. Throughout his career, Congressman Gray’s sound and progressive policy leadership inspired his constituents and conveyed hope to people across the country that America truly is a place of limitless opportunity for those who are willing to work hard and play by the rules. He cared deeply for society’s most vulnerable and advocated successfully for better housing, health care, safer communities and unfettered access to high quality public education. His dedication to higher learning fueled his enormous success in reinvigorating the United Negro College Fund. Under his leadership, the Fund raised more than $2 billion to ensure a continued flow of support to Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Congressman Gray devoted his entire life to eliminating barriers to achievement and facilitating good health, safety and quality of life. There was no better or more brilliant exemplar of public service than Congressman William H. Gray III.
