Understanding the role of sodium in the body is an important part of training. If you do not consume enough sodium in your diet on a daily basis, your body cannot maintain healthy fluid levels, and it may have a negative impact on the way your muscles expand and contract, especially during exercise. On the other hand, if you consume too much sodium every day you are at risk for high blood pressure, kidney disease and your body may even experience an inability to properly absorb the sodium you consume.

In the article Sodium: A Closer Look by PowerBar you will gain a better understanding of sodium as a critical electrolyte required for proper body function.

Salty Sweat Puts You At A Greater Risk

“The biggest difference between salty sweaters and other athletes is that salty sweaters lose more sodium when they sweat. Although they lose more sodium, salty sweaters have been shown to lose about the same amounts of chloride, potassium, calcium, and magnesium as non-salty sweaters. But the extra loss of salt has a dangerous implication: Research is increasingly showing that salty sweaters are at greater risk for muscle cramps and dehydration.”

Stay Hydrated
