Light Over Darkness
Dear Miley –
Please come in and have a seat. Let me pour you a cup of detoxifying tea so
that you can clearly hear from me. You
have had the internet and television all a buzz since your appearance on the
VMA’s. How does that feel?
As we sit here in the aftermath of your performance I just
wanted to have a quick word with you.
You see it wasn’t that long ago that I was a young 20 year old. I can relate to having my sexuality
awakened. “Sexuality” is not a sin. It is what we do with our sexuality that
makes the way for sin. There is only one
person that can judge you; so no need to point the middle finger at me.
I am not sure who you admire: maybe Madonna, Brittney
Spears, Lady Gaga, but I want to know if you have heard of Virginia Woolfe, Betty
Friedan, or Gloria Steinem? I ask because maybe you are not aware of the many
women who fought, and continue to fight for your right to “twerk” your way into
homes all across the world.
I understand that many around you may tell you that any
press, is good press. However, I am going to tell you just the opposite. Infamy
burns out quickly and soon the media will be on to the next hot mess. You mentioned in your performance you wanted
to start a movement. My dear exactly
what do you want your legacy to be? The most exceptional acts amongst us often
will never make headlines, but the legacy we leave will endure forever.
“You have to choose the best,
every day, without compromise...guided by your own virtue and highest ambition”
― Philippa Gregory
There is a virtuous woman that is roaring inside of you
beckoning to be explored. Let me warn
you, virtue will require discipline and lots of will power. Virtue will usher you to your greatest
climax, and really is the total opposite of our fleshly impulsive nature. Many
fail to reach their fullest potential because fast and easy are far more
tempting.
Let me validate that you are an adult now. You will reap
adult consequences. No one can tell you
what to do, what to wear, or who to see. You should be mindful that many people
age without maturing. Cherish your worth
and don’t give yourself away for free.
There will always be takers. Living
life on your own terms also means living with the consequence of your choices.
By now, you are probably bored with my appeal. Thank you for stopping by, and thank you for
listening to the encouragement from a stranger.
Sincerely,
My Daughter’s Mother
