Technology and Social Change

TECHNOLOGY

“But today our very survival depends on our ability to stay awake, to adjust to new ideas, to remain vigilant and to face the challenge of change. The large house in which we live demands that we transform this world-wide neighborhood into a world – wide brotherhood. Together we must learn to live as brothers or together we will be forced to perish as fools.

We must work passionately and indefatigably to bridge the gulf between our scientific progress and our moral progress. One of the great problems of mankind is that we suffer from a poverty of the spirit which stands in glaring contrast to our scientific and technological abundance. The richer we have become materially, the poorer we have become morally and spiritually.”

― Martin Luther King Jr.

2015 kicks off with more social activism and hashtags highlighting horrendous acts (#CharlieHebdo #JeSuisCharlie #IamNigeria). Can social media lead to social change? Social media has definitely made a difference in many key events, and has been attributed to bringing about real change. Conversely, sometimes hashtags can pass along misinformation or give the impression that there is action where there isn’t.
What is our moral obligation after the hashtag?

I can appreciate the perspective of Marissa in her piece written for The Guardian, “Nigeria: in defense of hashtags and #BringBackOurGirls”. I have changed the wording a bit to fit not only the issue of Boko Haram, but any social injustice.

“We as citizens of the world, with the resources available to us, out of a sense of shared humanity for our sisters and brothers who suffer at the hands of terror or any other injustice must implement human rights activism at the grassroots. By optimizing usage of our social media networks. Call attention to the tree that falls down in the forest. Pledge to keep the critical dialogue going over Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and via blogs, television, radio, and print media, keeping pressure on governments and militaries to act swiftly, effectively, and morally.”

As the opening quote by Martin Luther King Jr. suggests we cannot fail to enrich our spirit and humanity. Social technology is a tool to dispense information, and connect with others over shared interest. We shouldn’t lay down your morals, ethics, and good conduct when we sit down at the keyboard. Our social platforms are an extension of us and issues that matter most to us. The moral compass of society shouldn’t deteriorate because of technology. The internet increases our territory, but shouldn’t change our character.
