Living Well
“We have all experienced the
effect music can have on our emotions and state of mind. We have felt our
spirit lift when a happy song comes on the radio, or a pinging sense of
nostalgia when we hear the songs of our childhood. While this link between
music and emotion has long been a part of human life, only in recent decades
have we had the technology and foundational knowledge to understand music’s
effect on our brains in concrete terms.” ~ Scott Huntington for Oxford
University Press
Music has been my refuge for as
long as I can remember. My parents often
tell me the story of the only way that I would go to sleep as an infant was to
be placed right next to the music console. (Yikes! dating myself here).
Surely there has to be scientific explanation so to why music is common thread
that runs through fabric of humanity. Music is a universal language, but can it
also be a universal healer?

Music and rhythm touch our
emotions, but the words of a song affect our thoughts – our minds. The next time you tune it to your favorite
jam be mindful of the effects. No matter what is going on in our lives we can
find a song to fit the bill. Allow the
music to stir you in a positive direction.
