Greenhouse Gases and Climate Change

Green Living

We Are Giving The Earth Gas

The long term shift in weather patterns scientifically defined as climate change is an issue of global concern.  There is a general consensus that the actions of humans have an influence on the change in climate. For years environmentalist have work to connect extreme weather events to climate change. Many people agree that we have been experiencing extreme weather patterns, but fail to make a personal connection to understand what can be done about it. The largest contributing human factor to climate change is greenhouse gas emission.

Watch this quick video to understand the greenhouse effect and greenhouse gas emission.

Humans contribute to climate change because the amount of greenhouse gases that have been emitted since the rise of the industrial age.

“Human activities result in emissions of four principal greenhouse
gases: carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide
(N2O) and the halocarbons (a group of gases containing fluorine,
chlorine and bromine).” Source: oceanservice.noaa.gov

How Can We Reduce Greenhouse Gas?

5 Ways To Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions

  1. Know Your Carbon Footprint – Try this free Carbon Footprint Calculator
  2. Use Renewable Energy
  3. Perform Home Energy Audit – Make modifications to conserve energy
  4. Plant More Trees – Trees absorb carbon dioxide and give off oxygen.
  5. Make Your Vote Count – Understand your elected officials’ stance on climate change, and vote for a reduction in greenhouse emissions.
The daily changes we make can have a significant impact.  The Climate Action Tracker website provides an up-to-date assessment of individual national pledges, targets and INDCs (intended nationally determined contribution), and currently implemented policy to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

Much of climate change happens because of natural occurrences, but we shouldn’t negate the fact that humans contribute to process. We all should do our part to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases that are emitted into the atmosphere. Work to make more earth friendly choices daily.
